Belgian pilot Willy Coppens was the top balloon buster of WWI. Once he supposedly landed on a balloon, waited for a bit and took off. Truth appears to be he liked to attack the mooring cables, then as balloon rose he would shoot from above. At the end of April 1918 one rose to the point it caught his Hanriot HD1 lifting him skyward. Eventually he rolled off the deflating balloon restarting his engine as he went…. English Civil War: I believe it was the siege of Exeter, held by the Royalists. The Parliamentarians were about to give up and break off the siege when the last artillery shot before the guns were withdrawn broke a drawbridge chain on the citadel gates and a surprised Parliamentarian force quickly threw an ad hoc storming party across the downed drawbridge. |
