I was looking for something in the attic when I happened upon 40 or 50 unpainted Front Rank Spanish Napoleonic infantry in plastic baggies. I don't think I even remember buying them.

Are they left behind from the previous resident? ;)

I love when that happens, it's like you're finding extra Christmas presents!

I was at the Historicon dealer barn once. "Oh! Orc pirates! That's new!"
So when I got home, I was putting them away. I pulled out the tub where I wanted them to go, and there in that tub were more … Orc Pirates. 🤷

"I don't think I even remember buying them."
So you don't remember or you are not sure whether you remember buying them? I am confused.

I have done that for sure. My most exciting example was when I came across a box of 40K Praetorian Guard. Like finding a treasure chest!

Welcome to the club. I'm packing to move and coming up with serious numbers of unpanted 28mm horse & musket castings. Absolutely no recollection, and really not time to research the uniforms. Nothing to do (now) but put them in small, marked boxes and hope I can identify them and paint them--this winter?--if I can find those boxes.

I know I have forgotten certain figures I have bought but I can't recall ever forgotten that I did buy them.

I cannot say I have done this with miniatures but recently discovered I purchased a kickstarter war board game that I ended up already having in the collection.

I wrote the company and explained my situation and if I could substitute for another game. They said yes. That would have been a $100 USD mistake.

I've bought three sets of Medieval buildings in 15mm from Alternative Armies quite by accident after the first one. All still usable, but jeez.

All this supports my contention that miniature wargaming is not an inherently expensive hobby: it just tends to absorb available money.

Last week I found a 24 fig unit of Austrian SYW grenzers that will do very nicely for Russian Pandours – now that I recall bought them when I was building up my Austrian army and after doing the third unit of Grenzers forgot about the fourth

Never happens to me. I have a mind like a steel … um … er … something

Personal logo Choctaw Supporting Member of TMP31 Jul 2026 1:37 p.m. PST

So that's where I left them!

Tgerritsen Supporting Member of TMP31 Jul 2026 2:49 p.m. PST

I have done that. Even worse it was a case of seeing some miniatures on a shelf or at a convention and thinking ‘Wow, those look great!' Then going home only to discover I had bought them previously and now they are a duplicated part of my growing pile of shame!

Guilty. I've occasionally opened a box tucked in a back closet and discovered either a) something I bought under the impression I did not have it when I already did or b) simply something I forgot I'd ever had.

40 or 50 unpainted Front Rank Spanish Napoleonic infantry

More infantry is always useful, even if they just serve as an example to others.

more … Orc Pirates.

One can never have enough orcs, or pirates, or orc pirates. Perfect henchmen.

Now you have a serious medieval village!

None of my horses wear pants, but bare-legged musket-bearing riders sound interesting. Could they be post-medieval berserkers or something like that?

I'm as guilty as anyone. I can't remember specific examples, but I can remember that feeling of, "oh! I already have that one … what color scheme should the new one get?"

I'd like to say it never happens but there are still a few surprises from "the eBay years".

Apparently I was going to paint strip them and give them a slightly better paint job ..I suspect they'll end up on eBay one of these Days….

I have been sorting and labeling many of my figures and came across a number that I do not remember getting. A box of some 20 packs of Askari figures I recalled getting for doing a Lion of the Desert game that I had forgotten about. Guess I will try to sell.

Syrinx003 Aug 2026 5:27 p.m. PST

Doesn't happen often now as I have an inventory project spreadsheet I maintain. Of course if I forget to check it while at a show…

The Gonk06 Aug 2026 1:06 p.m. PST

Yep, it happened to me. When you've been buying for 30 years I suppose it's not that unreasonable. But I started an inventory and that has helped.
