"A horde of Bronze-Age Greeks" Topic

I keep grinding away at the mountain of little lead Greeks. This batch will provide the core of the Greek army that is besieging Troy. Now I just need a dozen of so chariots.

I wish the blog had a vendor preference listing for data harvesting with a "reject all" button, it takes forever to go through deselecting everything.

I've finished my Mycenaean Greek infantry, and I'm working on painting the chariots, rather less than enthusiastically.

Watching the new movie, "The Odyssey," I noticed Penelope and others mentioning the Sea Peoples as a looming threat to the Greek homeland. Repelling a Sea People invasion or raid is an alternative, if you want to do a smaller battle or skirmish while painting the hordes needed for the siege.

I'm building the slightly earlier army. Using Foundry and resin print figures.
I've done a couple of dozen that are pretty much the same as the figures in the lead picture. But, the other day I saw on Facebook a discussion on work of Guiseppe Rava that caused me to stop. He posted a painting of a Bronze Age Greek warrior with extremely dark skin. A follower challenged that saying the skin colour should be paler.
Guiseppe Rava came back and said he felt the skin colour should be dark as they lived in a hot sunny climate and wore limited clothing. To make his point he posted a modern picture of someone from Crete showing that the skin tone was quite dark.

So I'm rethinking my approach.

Greiber, I started painting the chariots today, cleanup and assembly took all last night's free time. In game terms they have the worst ROI, lots of prep and paint for what is little better than a light cavalry unit.

Phillius, I was of two mind about that, DNA says central European sources for the population but you are correct that long-term exposure will darken the skin tone. I'm half Irish and half northern German and by the end of summer I'm pretty brown. If I change my mind I guess I can go back and hit them all with a coat of Gulliman Flesh or similar

This has been a problem with battle games, but maybe we've been doing it wrong. You have 28mm stuff, maybe you need something more like a dogfight game – charioteers swirling around the field shooting arrows at everyone and occasionally wrecking, or hopping off to fight on foot, capture an opponent, issue a coup de grace, etc. They are the heroes in the stories, after all, maybe it's time we treated them as such. This should be easy enough to graft onto a mass-skirmishy battle game for the formed troops, like WHB or a Rampant game or a TSATF variant.
