The 4th Virginia Continental Regiment saw extensive action in the northern theatre, participating in the New York and New Jersey Campaign (1776–1777), where it fought at the Battle of Trenton (December 26th, 1776) and the Battle of Princeton (January 3rd, 1777), as well as the Philadelphia Campaign (1777–1778), including the Battle of Brandywine (September 11th, 1777) and the Battle of Germantown (October 4th, 1777).
It endured the harsh winter at Valley Forge in 1777–1778 and later engaged in the Battle of Monmouth (June 28th, 1778). Reorganized in November 1777 to eight companies and consolidated on May 12th, 1779, with the 8th Virginia Regiment to form a nine-company unit assigned to the 2nd Virginia Brigade, it shifted south and suffered heavy losses when most of its men were captured by British forces during the Siege of Charleston (May 12th, 1780).
