Thanks! I thought I had seen something mentioned, but not this report. I am likewise skeptical, but desperation is a cruel mistress. I recall that part of the naval rational was that subs were often seeing targets silhouetted against the sky making regular camo ineffective. Apparently, the paint may have worked to well. I recall the story of an escort captain asking the bridge crew to estimate the bearing of one of the merchantmen so presented. It was reported no two results were within five degrees. Sounds daunting if one is grouped closely… Doug |

Russian "zebra" camouflage trucks continue to be successfully targeted and destroyed by Ukrainian drones, despite Moscow's attempts to use the high-contrast patterns to confuse automated targeting algorithms. Military analysts and Ukrainian field operators, such as those highlighted in reports by United24 Media and The Telegraph, point to several reasons why the zebra trucks are still being destroyed
The unique zebra markings unintentionally act as a conspicuous signature. Ukrainian engineers can easily feed footage of the striped trucks back into their algorithms, quickly retraining the machine-vision models to actively hunt for the zebra pattern. While some drones utilize autonomous terminal guidance, most operations still involve human pilots. To a human operator looking through an FPV (First-Person View) drone feed, a bright black-and-white truck heavily contrasts against natural environments, making it a highly visible target.
Drones equipped with infrared or thermal cameras are entirely unaffected by visible light paint. They target the intense heat signatures radiating from the truck's engine, exhaust system, and tires, rendering the zebra pattern useless at night or in low visibility.

I wonder if the lack of success was more down to how the vehicles were used? Dazzle camouflage on ships was about confusing and complicating a firing solution based on visual assessment. In principle, therefore, it makes sense to try it against visually guided drones. However, the camouflage doesn't hide the ship itself; it 'hides' the closing/opening and crossing rates which the targeting operator/system needs to calculate a firing solution. So, if a land vehicle is either stationary or moving predictably (e.g. on a road), dazzle camouflage isn't going to do you much good. |

On the other side of the equation, I seem to recall naval attack aircraft would have lights on during the day as a form of camouflage. The lights cancelled out the dark outline of the aircraft. |

It smacks of "heathens" 🙄 colonial armies being told that wearing a red headband or white feather made them invulnerable to infidel bullets. If they believed, they would charge harder and longer. |

Andy ONeill, I think if this had happened, the Ukrainians would have flooded the internet with videos of it.))) But I haven't seen a single one yet. Woollygooseuk, I think the goal was to prevent the AI from identifying the target as a military vehicle. But that's pointless now that these drones attack any vehicle on the road, military or not. |
