Leaning towards To the Strongest after my query from a few days ago. I am wondering if there is enough info in the basic rules to figure out your own army list? Because I live in the mountains, I am a soloist and don't go to conventions, so I don't need a lot of lists. Additionally, I already have my armies from other rules sets, so I don't need a list to build them. I basically have two areas of interest. I have Carthage and Rome from 2nd Punic War in Italy and a Macedonian army as well as a flexible group that I use for Persians or Indians. Note that much of the lists and unit size had as much to do with what was fun to paint and how many figs came in a pack as anything else. For example, here is my Carthage army (I give the strength in figs as I don't yet know how that translates to the rules for units): Gaulish cavalry: 10 heavy & 10 medium Spanish cavalry: 10 heavy & 10 medium Numidian cavalry: 3 units of 6 Carthaginian vets: 1 unit if 20, 1 of 18 Gaulish infantry: 24 medium, 18 light Spanish Infantry: 24 medium Skirmishers: several units – Gauls, dismounted Numidians, Spanish & Balearic slingers, Some elephants of course. Because their cool (even if they croaked early on) And their Roman opponents: Roman cavalry: 24 figs (usually 3 units of 8) Allied cavalry: 22 figs (usually units of 10 & 12) 1st Legion: 12 velites, 2 x 12 Hastati, 2x12 Princepes & 12 Triarii 2nd Legion: as above, but slightly lower quality (I call it a penal legion) Allies: 12 skirmishers and two units of spearmen: 24 & 30 As for my Macedonians, I have: Cavalry 8 figs each: Companions, Thessalians & lancers Cavalry 6 figs: Thracians & Greek light Hypaspists: 18 Phalanx: 3 units of 18 Greek Hoplites (sometime used in my Persian lists): 30 Skirmishers & light infantry: various units of Agrianians, Thracians and others. Usualy 8-10 figs. Can I work these out just using the basic rules? |

Have a look here. The free army lists might help. The game is unit based so figure numbers are not too crucial. PDF link

The base rule book does not have much in the way of army building, you'll want to purchase the Ancient Armies list book. Or you can download the roster builder – which is an excel file that can be used to point out your army. Unit size will be a function of how big of a grid you want to play with. Most units will be 2 ranks deep with width matched to your grid. Some units are "Deep" (such as Gauls and Hoplites) and should be 3 or 4 ranks deep. |
