link 48 light years away is pretty damn close! In my unofficial head estimates, I'd say any planet within 100 ly of Earth is viable for future space tech to reach. Under 50 and it's almost an easy trip for known or proposed technology (with some engineering work). Certainly doable for a probe, especially a rapid fly-by. Not in any of our lifetimes (maybe our grandkids), but that shouldn't stop us. At the very least, it's a highly viable candidate to have life. Man the transports! It's time to colonize, baby! |

Please let me know when a probe--manned or robotic--reports back to confirm any of the astronomers' reasoning on exoplanets. Easy to be confident when you know there's no way to check your assertion. |
