Haven't read much sci-fi space battle fleet stuff lately. Been spending time reading Philip K. Dick's short stories. Anyone have some recommendations for cracking good space ship battle yarns? Sort of a Horatio Hornblower, Richard Bolitho in space type stuff. The last good ones I read were the "Lost Fleet" books. The last bleh ones I checked out were Weber's honorverse books. It's a genre I don't follow too closely, and of course a lot of it is badly written and formulaic, like a lot of the D&D books. Anyway, appreciate your thoughts! |

The Honor Harrington series by David Weber. Notice the alliteration in the lead character's name … |

The Vatta War series by Elizabeth Moon. Excellent. Gets really brutal in the last book, but worth the read. (Very gifted writer, too, who knows her stuff.) The Tour of the Merrimack series by R.E. Meluch. Great fun. Among the opposition, the Roman Empire… in space. Yes, literally. Kris Longknife series by Mike Shepherd. Similar in some respects to the Vatta War series— both are clearly inspired by Hornblower. Has some interesting ideas on space combat. I think all three are superior to the Honorverse, and better written than The Lost Fleet (though I enjoyed those myself). |

I too enjoyed many of the Honor Harrington books by Weber: link Harrington is a female lead, but these preceded wokism, so it's not dripping with revolutionary slime like they would be if published today. Lots of Napoleonic flavor in there. |

You might try The Last Hunter series by J.N. Chaney It's 16 books, but I enjoyed them. |

An older series – published in the 90s that might be more to your liking Seafort Saga by David Feintuch – 7 in the published series – rumors of an eighth unpublished manuscript before author passed away Spoiler Summary of books link If you prefer more the Space Opera – take a look at John Grimes Series (books all re-published in 6 omnibuses by Baen) |

I'm with Rittervon Beck: David Drake's RCN novels would be my pick. |
