Hi, I have recently dug out my old copy of Charles Grant's The Wargame intending to rebase my armies to use these Old School Rules which use 48 single figures plus 5 Officers per unit.
I Remember some interesting games using plastic figures back in the 70s & want to recreate my youth now I'm in my dotage :)
However, I have been through the whole book several times making notes to put everything in order but what I cannot reconcile is the system used for the Morale Index.
Mr. Grant is very clear on his Line Infantry establishments, each with a Mounted Colonel worth 2pts & the other 4 Officers 1ptt each to reach the required total of 6
On Cavalry, he is a little less forthcoming, admitting to them having 4 Officers for both Heavy & Light Cavalry (borne out in the photographs in the book) but not how the 6 Morale Index points are distributed between these gentlemen
Ditto with his LI units – photos show 1 Mounted & 2 Foot Officers but no light shed as to relevant points
Artillery too has 1 Mounted & 2 Foot Officers
The only other info is for Militia which has only 4 Officers with the Colonel counting 2pts & the others 1pt each resulting in a Morale Index of only 5, befitting of a non-regular unit
So, to my questions…
Does anyone else play to the Rules As Written & can you tell me how you square the Morale Indices of the various arms?
Any other variants proved worthwhile?
If you play with smaller units, what are their establishments? I'm thinking of keeping the Officers as is but reducing my units to 36 Infantry, 18 Light Infantry & Cavalry atm purely because I can't fit a 9' x 7' table in my flat…
Any info or insight would be welcome.
Regards,
Jae
