The Quest for the Grail – A Three-Player Lion Rampant Scenario

"In the turbulent years of the Crusades, word spread of a holy relic hidden in a ruined chapel deep in contested lands: the Holy Grail.

Three rival hosts converged:

The Crusaders, determined to secure the Grail for Christendom and carry it west.
The Byzantines, intent on preserving the relic within the Orthodox Empire.
A Local Baron, seeking treasure and divine favour to strengthen his claim to power.

Only one side could prevail."

We played this as a three-player game of Lion Rampant (2nd Edition) last night and it produced one of the most exciting multiplayer games we've had.

Right up to the end of Turn 10, any of the three warbands could still have won. The Grail changed hands, fortunes swung back and forth and no player ever felt out of the game.

The best compliment came afterwards: instead of packing away and moving on, everyone wanted to play it again. In fact, we're already talking about expanding it to four players with another army joining the hunt.

I'm interested in other gamers' experiences. Three-player games can be notoriously difficult to design well—they often end up with two players ganging up on the third, or one player sitting on the sidelines while the others fight.

Have you found any mechanics, victory conditions or scenario ideas that make three-player games work particularly well?
