"New Brookhurst Game Club - Looking for Historical Gamers" Topic

BH, in Garden Grove, California, has opened up a new game club. It is now located a few doors down from the store, in a huge room, with plenty of gaming space.

I would like to find some historical gamers that would like to meet regularly there. My focus is mainly 15mm Renaissance to early 20th century. I also play GW's War of the Ring, in 25mm, as well as sci-fi ships. I am open to other periods too.

Good luck with that Brian. I think a lot of gamers will enjoy historical battles when encouraged to play them.

Of the ones you mention I think FF will be a good starter/appetiser.

Up northward in the San Fernando valley / Northern LA area and nearby environs we have four historical gaming groups. Someday we should all met at the HMGS-PSW convention (October 2026).

1). San Fernando Valley Group – Dana and Steve with others. Generally they cover AWI (28mm/15mm), Bolt Action, ACW 15mm, and WSS (25/28mm).

2). Thousand Oaks area – Adam and company. Pike and Shotte 28mm, Fate of Nation and FOW Ver 4.0 in 15mm.

3). Major Wellington group covers Chain of Command, Blood Plunder, and Napoleonic using Black powder…and other games.

4). Lastly my group here at the Warren in Northridge have bi-monthly games in: Clash of Empires (25/28mm) ancients, 9YW/WSS (25/28mm) with Dana's group above, Napoleonic (25/28mm) covering every nation of the period and the Republican era too, FOW X (the Ver3.0 updated) in 15mm and 20mm scales. Tend to play many off theater actions alongside the common major powers under historical scenario formatting and not tournament play. Naval battles on patio for 1/700 ship model battles (Victory at Sea upgraded) or aerial with Wings of War/Glory miniatures. Then there is the Blood and Plunder and HALO miniature battles for short quick result play.

It's good to see some additional groups in the area.

It really seems that historical have died off in the So Cal area, and what games are being played are from the mainstream companies such as Battlefront, Warlord, Perry, or Osprey. Independents have all gone to the side of the road.

There are some historical games at the local St Crispins meetings, but they are set in their ways and only play Flames of War and Team Yankee. Though I have seen an occasional 25mm ACW or DBM game.

There is even a 24-hour gaming center that opened up called "Squad Marks" (in Garden Grove), a membership-based place where you can play 24-7! But it only has mainstream games there, such as 40K, Star Wars, Warhammer, and no historical games at all (not even Flames of War or Bolt Action).

There used to be so many small clubs in So Cal…What ever happened to Stephen Phenow's group at Drum Barracks or Tim Green's PIGS group?

My group literally died off (as in passed away) after having played with them for over 20 years. Sadly, we could never find any replacements.

Yes the gamer ageing factor is here…. many in Dana's and my Warren group have common dice rolling back to the late 70's. So we have 50+ years of fellowship across the table. But we have all used the years to improve the group games and improved the rules. We generally are not hidebound to the mainstream rules and as a group almost nobody plays in tournaments. To us, I assume the other two mentioned northern groups are the same, pending any input to this thread, the games are more social in nature. And another common group aspect is the willingness to play uneven, structured and unstructured, historical scenarios and not "matched" play off games. We tend for "team playing" game format and the rules reflect that concepts, counter to the modern rule sets you mentioned in most cases. Maybe it keeps as young in heart…. and can still read the numbers on the dice.

But there is one factor I still mention…. there is very little player mixing from northern LA region past the mid city region. Orange county seems like a far way land of gaming….just like the distance from OC down to the San Diego region for your neck of the woods.

Yeah, used to hit St crispins and brookhurst every month or two but have gotten old and that's a fur piece to go anymore :/ Game with the bengal club every two weeks. Mostly historical. I'm in the west valley.
