"On May 13, Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping spoke at a bilateral meeting inaugurating their second summit in Beijing and their sixth meeting altogether. In his welcoming remarks, Xi grandly declared the world had come to a "new crossroads."

Amid a four-year-old war between Russia and Ukraine and two months of American military strikes against Iran, Xi inquired whether "China and the United States [can] overcome the Thucydides Trap and create a new paradigm of major country relations? Can we meet global challenges together and provide more stability for the world?"

While conjuring crossroads and paradigms underscored the potential upside of summitry between the world's two greatest powers, it was the invocation of the Thucydides Trap that captured everyone's attention.

According to Graham Allison of Harvard University, the American scholar who originated the thesis, states ensnared in the Thucydides Trap go to war in three out of every four encounters. For vigilant American national security observers and decision-makers, such odds make preparing for a potential war with an ascendant PRC an imperative…"

Nah. Xi Jinping's invocation of the "Thucydides Trap" at the Beijing summit is just a cheeky PR move — the idea that a rising power (China) vs. established power (US) makes war almost inevitable, so America should accommodate Beijing to avoid it. Reality check: The US isn't declining — we lead in energy, food, tech, alliances, military, and demographics. China faces shrinking population, debt, energy dependence, and regional resistance, and the CCP is at war with itself. This isn't Sparta fearing Athens. It's revisionist China testing a strong, free America. Deterrence and strength beat accommodation. No trap — just choices.

The United States is the largest producer of oil, coal, and geothermal energy. China is the largest producer of hydroelectric, solar, and coal energy. China is also the largest overall producer of energy. However, unlike the United States it uses more energy than it produces. China is also the largest food producer, but again consumes more than it produces. Its military is larger than the United States, but the capabilities of the US military far exceed those of China. We are the leaders in tech and alliances and our demographics are definitely better than China's.
