"Battle of Turin 1706. Are you interested?" Topic

dear all, as you can see (maybe too much) I am focused (also) on the battle of Turin 1706. I have access to a lot of direct info about this battle (I live in Turin) and I do like to make investigations on everything: uniforms, tactics maps etc.
So I was wandering: would you be interested in a book concerning this battle, with ALL the uniforms of ALL units, with tons of map as in my last post, pictures from the site etc.?

Yes, Please.With your knowledge of the battle, knowing where to obtain official information, it would be a sin if you do not pursue it. It would be awesome to see coverage of a seldom gamed battle and then, without the benefit of accurate information,that you have access to.

I agree with Enfant Perdus above. A book on the WSS in Italy would certainly be of interest for me. I like the promise of lots of maps.

A book just on Turin would be great, but something on the war in Italy generally would be even better.

I have already praised your post in the past (;-)). Concerning a book: I have already several books "print-on-demand" in my library, perhaps this is a (for you) practical option ? And in The Netherlands we have a publisher who regularly offers rather expensive books (60 or 70 euros) that are fascinating for our hobby but are being published because of the fact that the Army guarantees an important number to be sold. We ordinary hobbyist can after a while buy those books for a much lower price.

Well, I am very pleased by your comments and they encourage me to carry this work forward. My dream, of course, would be to broaden the scope of the research to include the other campaigns as well (1704 and 1705, or the Siege of Toulon in 1707, or the capture of the Alpine forts in 1708), but I fear that would go beyond what I can realistically achieve in my lifetime

For now, I will try to prepare a first chapter and see how it develops—how best to structure it, with maps, uniform plates, descriptions of the events, and so on—and then expand it from there.

As for publication, I still need to work out the best way to proceed. Making a profit is not my goal; for me, this is purely a matter of passion and of sharing an idea and a project with fellow enthusiasts. Above all, I would like to see the Battle of Turin studied in such depth that it can stand comparison with the great works devoted to Blenheim. GRAZIE DI CUORE!

The siege of Toulon in 1707 would be of particular interest. I did a game based around that some years ag and it worked out very well. It was a victory for the French

For many years, ANYTHING with regards to early to mid 1700s has been elusive (to say the least!).Recently, we have some progress made to help those of us who would like to know more. All the below deals with conflicts in Spain, Italy (Piedmont and Savoy) France, Spanish and Austrian involvement. Hope this may help:

Here are a few I grabbed from my library:

1. The War of Spanish Succession in Spain 1702-1711. Written by Col. A. Parnell. Available from George Nafzinger- the original was published by George Bell in London (1904) Isbn 1-58545-471-6 (www.nafzigercollection.com) He has many titles in his catalog for this theatre and period.(soft Cover)- all B&W

2. Marlborough's Other Army by Nicholas Dorrell, Hard Back, Helion "Century of the Soldier" series, ISBN 978-1-910294-63-3. The British Army and the Campaigns of the First Peninsular War, 1702-1712. A few maps and some color pics of a few leaders.

3. You Have To Die in Piedmont! by Giovanni Cerino Badone, Hardback, Helion "From Reason to Revolution serie". ISBN: 978-1-911628-50-7. The title is from a lyric in a song sung by Piedmontese soldiers-talking to the French Marshal Belle-Isle. Set in the War of Austrian Succession it details Turin- the bloodiest one of the War in Italy. Recommended!

4. Luzzara 1702. The Battle of Midsummer by Fabio Fiorentin; Soldiershop Publishing; ISBN 9788893279147, Battlefield-028. Includes some awesome color uniform and flag info. This series is available from Amazon in the USA. Excellent for raising your wargame units!

5. Perhaps a bit before the period discussed, this one will befound to touch base upon another related period in the area: "The Spanish Armies in the War of the League of Augsburg (Nine Years War 1688-1697) (Organization, History & Uniforms); Many contributors but Giancarlo Boeri and well illustrated (in color) by R. Hall. Another gem from Soldiershop Publishing, SWU-600-011 series; ISBN 9791255892274. A figurepainter's dream reference!

6. "Forty-Four Months in the Alps- The resistance of the Piedmontese Army Against Revolutionary France, 1792-1796" by Enrico Ricchiardi, Helion Reason to Revolution Series, ISBN 978-1-804516-77-5. Definately later period than the above but being a wargamer, it bleeds over quite well! Color illustrations with flags for the fellow figure painters here. Lots of well researched history in all the above.

I know I have a few more but my disorganized library shelving needs some time consuming reorganization. I hope that this helps someone reading this thread as finding good reference materials is like searching for a needle in a haystack!

I should also prepare a sort of list of all the books concerning WSS (fod WAS I have also some): a lot of them are quite old (for example the books published in Turin in 1906 for the anniversary of 200years from the battle, while nothing was written in 1806, being Turin part of France!) others are written in Italian in 2006 and other in the middle of the XX century. I will try to do (it would be useful also for me) this list, so that I can grab with easy all the info I need.
