This hand-drawn manuscript map is a tactical sketch of the June 26, 1781 action at Spencer's Ordinary, near Williamsburg. The German title translates roughly as "Plan of the action at Spencer's House, seven miles from Williamsburg." It shows the main road, troop positions and movements, and the surrounding woods and broken ground that shaped the fighting. Encyclopedia Virginia identifies it as a map drawn by Hessian officer Captain Johann Ewald for his military diary and notes that it records troop locations and movements throughout the battle. Citation: Ewald, Johann. Plan von dem Gefecht bei Speniers/Spencers Haus Sieben Meilen von Williamsburg [Plan of the action at Spencer's House, seven miles from Williamsburg]. Hand-drawn manuscript map, depicting the Battle of Spencer's Ordinary, June 26, 1781. Created 1791. Bloomsburg University Archives, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. Reproduced in Encyclopedia Virginia, "Ewald's Map of Spencer's Ordinary."
