The 11th Virginia Regiment was authorized by the Second Continental Congress on 16th September 1776 and organized on 3rd February 1777. It initially consisted of four companies from Loudoun, Frederick, Prince William, and Amelia Counties, Captain Daniel Morgan's Independent Rifle Company from Fauquier County, and five companies from the Maryland and Virginia Rifle Regiment.

The regiment saw action in several major battles of the American Revolutionary War, including the Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown, and the Battle of Monmouth. Later reassigned to the 2nd Virginia Brigade and reorganized to nine companies. It was redesignated as the 7th Virginia Regiment on 12th May 1779. It was captured a year later at the Siege of Charleston and was subsequently disbanded on 1st January 1781.
