I'm a traditionalist.

Cut off from the ebb and flow of time, I've stuck to enamel paint, scorning the advances in acrylics.

But, slowly but surely, this is starting to pose a problem as the well has dried and I can't get enamel paint (more specifically humbrol, accept no substitute) in my (enlarged) area anymore.

For now it's not a problem. I still have an ample enough stock to last for quite some time…but as I contemplate the future, my prospects are grim.

So, as to spare my stock of tanish or khakish paints which I've used as first coat as of now (skipping the primer phase as humbrol laughs at puny primer), I've been slowly getting to the point where I'm considering to start using primer.

Problem is, I'm not too sure how using enamel (which, in the case of humbrol, contains highly potent methyl-ethyl-keytone in its thinner) over an acrylic primer will react.

Now I've been advised car primer but there are many kinds and I'm not exactly a car paint expert so I'm a bit at a loss.

I've also read in the latest wargames illustrated that a good painter uses humbrol over acrylic but I'm skeptic and thinking I might've read that wrong.

And so I'm looking for insights, recommandations, past experiences which could help me in determining what kind of primer to get.

I use Dupli-Color sandable primer for all my figs (plastic and metal) It comes in colors. Get mine from O'Reillys auto. about 10-11 bucks for a 12 oz can.

I've never encountered problems using Humbrol over any primer or acrylic.

Also stuck in the past with my enamels, mostly Humbrol but a few choice Revell in there as well. The ever-shrinking range is increasingly a problem and I worry whether I will run out of some soon.
