…or on what sort of game mat should my Men of Harlech fight their AZW battles? Most of us either use bright European mats or desert mats.In the past, I've used my European green mats for 'garage games". I now have Cigar Box sand-coloured mats….too much "Sahara"? link Looking at photographs of KwaZulu-Natal, the answer seems to lie somewhere between the two—a dry yellow-brown veld with patches of green and plenty of rocky ground. What do other gamers use for their AZW tables? |

Exactly like your paragraph starting "Looking at…". There's a great book for this: "From Helpmekaar to Isandlwana..and back again" by Frank Allewell. full of photos of Zululand and battlefield sites. Perfect for what you are talking about |

I would suggest semi arid or scrub tundra. It does rain there so a desert is too much sand. I use a brown felt with patches of green & tan splotches. I don't have the nice mats, I'm kinda old skool in that regard. |

Definitely too sahara; even in the middle of a prolonged drought, the area would be dead grass not desert. For Cigar Box offerings, their original Open Grassland seems the best choice. (Sicily seems too splotchy). link |
