Hi! I've painted the Georgian Thomasville Zouaves for my Confederate army : link I think I put the flags in the good order this time… I hope you'll like them! Max

Wonderful paint jobs! Not sure what you mean about putting "the flags in good order". Confederate regiments almost never carried two flags anyway, but if they had displayed both a state flag and an army flag the state flag would have had the position of honor (the blue saltire-on-red was the ANV army flag, _not_ a national flag). |

Fantastic job on these. This is what I like about ACW units. So much to choose from. |

I love the slightly glossy look of these figures. I try to do mine the same way. Love them. Great unit. |

Excellent work! Sadly, it was only a single company and the Zouave uniforms issued in the summer of 1860 as a pre-war militia company were replaced when they became a part of the 29th Georgia Infantry and would see their first major action at Chickamauga. As colorful as Zouave units are, there were no entire Confederate regiments uniformly dressed in the same uniform. The famous Louisiana Tigers were only a single company (there were several other companies in zouave uniforms but of different styles). Even those companies within a regiment that had zouave uniforms at the beginning of the war soon replaced them. Union Zouaves for the most part kept their uniforms, and new Zouave units were still being formed throughout the war. Kim |

Thanks for your messages! Apparently, the Confederate flag should be on the left when facing the regiment. I get this satin finish because I apply one coat of gloss varnish followed by two coats of matte varnish. Although I consider this satin look a flaw, it makes the paint virtually indestructible. Even though Zouave uniforms didn't last very long during the Civil War, I am completely obsessed with them. I've already painted five regiments I believe, and I definitely plan on making more (from other wars and other continents)! |

Blue Max, to be clear on my meaning, the red flag with the blue saltire is NOT a "Confederate flag", in the sense that it is not a flag of the soi-disant nation "The Confederate States of America". It is an army flag of the Army of Northern Virginia (which actually did not exist in 1861 under that name, nor did it at that time fly that particular flag). If you want them to display a Confederate national flag, it should be the "Stars and Bars". (I'm assuming the state-seal-on-blue flag is an 1860s variant "Georgia State Flag", which would take precedence over an army flag.) |

Beautiful work indeed. Zouave units are always colourful choices. The flag issue is an interesting subject. If you are in line with the regiment, that is facing the enemy, then the National Flag has the post of honour on the right. The regimental flag is on the left. This is correct for Union formations. However, as pointed out the Confederate battle flag, first issued in late 1861 was a ANV flag, not a national flag. I believe that in early 1863 the ANV was instructed to return their state flags. The Texas units appear to have kept theirs. My apologies for the error. Best wishes, Chris |
