Not necessarily "reckless" as reported – stupid and likely to promote a severe reaction, but at no point was there a genuine risk to life. There was no bomb, and unlike shouting "fire" in a theatre there was no stampede for the exits. Hopefully he has to pay for everyone's inconvenience and new flights. |

"There was no bomb, and unlike shouting "fire" in a theatre there was no stampede for the exits." It was in the air, right? Heading to the exits would not seem like a viable option. 😉 Give the kid a free ride across the ocean… in the wheel well. 🥶 |

Should get put on a no-fly list permanently. |

Lifetime ban on United plus a spot on the ‘no -fly list' for say, a decade. Stupid and feckless should have consequences. Certainly a fine for wasted fuel and inconvenience, say $500,000 USD +/-. |

The penalty needs to be severe enough and PUBLICIZED widely to prevent any such stupidity in future. And, ahem, speaking as a former 16 yo idiot, and a teacher and dorm parent of many, the penalty must include the young gentleman writing PERSONAL and INDIVIDUAL letters of apology to every passenger. Long hand. And community service after school and summers until he is eighteen. |
35thOVI | 01 Jun 2026 1:23 p.m. PST |
Why community service? Make him perform service at each person's house he inconvenienced, at his and his parents expense. He was 16 if I read correctly. |

Needs a damn good thrashing, what?, till the blood flows. I would suppose a public execution is out of the question? |

Needs to be at the very least named and shamed. And of course, caned. |

"I would be inclined to punch the kid, or worse!" (remembers scene from Airplane! where passengers lined up to beat another… ;-) |

They probably won't name him as he's 16, surprised if they did. He'll get off with a severe talking to and nothing else except a few years banned on the airline. |
| WarWizard | 02 Jun 2026 2:54 a.m. PST |
Need to be severe punishment so some other doesn't pull this crap. At 16 you have to be aware of what's going on in the world. |

Should have finished the flight and had him arrested in Spain. Let him sit in a Spanish prison for a few years for his stupidity! |

This is one of the unique cases where I would support making the parents liable for the poor choices of their offspring. If you are going to provide your child with electronics, you, as a parent, have an obligation to ensure that your child is using those electronics in a reasonable and responsible manner. If parents start getting the bill for the shenanigans of their poorly raised children, I think we would see a decrease in this type of incident. I think that the days of "kids will be kids" should be coming to an end. It is a slippery slope, but one that needs to be navigated. The alternative is to allow kids to misbehave with no penalty. Does putting this kid on the no fly list really communicate the magnitude of the kid's actions. How hard would it have been for the parents of the offender to confirm that the kid was following the crew's instructions. I imagine that the parents will fight to defend little Tommy or little Sally as just a rambunctious kid who meant no harm and who did not realize the ramifications of the "prank." If the kid was traveling with parents, it would have been easy for the parents to confirm compliance. If the kid was traveling alone, then the parents should never have exposed society to their immature child. Having to sell the family home to satisfy a civil judgment would be a greater deterrent than placing the child on a no fly list for a couple years. |

These clout-seeking pranks are getting way out of hand. He needs to face charges and jail time. |

Red, the kids being kids defense is strong and getting stronger. Watch body cam footage and after seeing the behavior listen for the punishment, its either none or a slap. Yep, they're sure clamping on those teen takeovers and fast food places are starting to card or close in dining because of the behavior. I won't be surprised if the action gets repeated. |

If you are going to provide your child with electronics, you, as a parent, have an obligation to ensure that your child is using those electronics in a reasonable and responsible manner. That is a possible approach -there have been a few cases recently where the parents who gave their children guns have been held responsible for the school shooting that followed. It makes sense – if you let your 12 year old drive your car, and they kill someone then similarly the owner of the car takes their share of the blame. |

"That is a possible approach -there have been a few cases recently where the parents who gave their children guns have been held responsible for the school shooting that followed. It makes sense " As should judges who release criminals guilty of violent crimes back into the streets early, or with no sentence at all and the perp turns around and kills, maims or commits another violent crime that harms others. They too should be held responsible. Actually those who allowed violent illegals into the country. They too should be held accountable if the perp commits crimes here. |

Are we sure he named the bluetooth speaker "BOMB" in order to cause chaos on the flight or elsewhere? When was the name "BOMB" given to the speaker? The closer in time to the flight, the more likely he intended the result that occurred. The information we have now equally supports the possibility that he just liked the speaker. "How's the speaker?" "It's the bomb!" |
