So strange to see a Crusader castle still relevant, it has been fought over often in modern times.

Its location was/is important based on the terrain and situation. Generally, structures like that were built in a strategically critical location that has good LOS, on higher ground, etc.

I would not doubt that Hezbollah could use such a tactic. As for the most part many would not want to see that bombed, e.g. Monte Cassino.
