Some months ago I decided to broaden our horizons with Dragon Rampant and built an "Evil" force — Half-orcs, Trolls, Warg riders, Dark Riders and the like. It actually took me several games against more conventional "human" forces (essentially Lion Rampant retinues with Fantasy additions) before I could assemble armies that felt truly competitive.

Some units simply seemed underwhelming for their cost. For example, I painted up some Orc-crewed giant crossbows which look splendid on the table but, in practice, have yet to justify their points!

I've now persuaded several of my regular opponents to raise Fantasy contingents of their own, and I've volunteered to build an Elven force.

Currently inbound in the post are enough figures for:

two Archer units
two Elite Foot units
one Heavy Foot unit
one Light Foot unit
two Centaur Heavy Cavalry units
one Centaur Light Cavalry unit
Galadriel as a Sorceress

Altogether, that gives me roughly 40 points with a reasonable number of options once painted.

My question for experienced Dragon Rampant/Fantasy players is this: does the force sound balanced, or am I overlooking something important? For example, should an Elven army really include some large creature or "monster" equivalent — perhaps an Ent or Treeman?

Any advice would be most welcome.

Depending on the scenario, you might want a unit that can move through rough terrain at full speed ("Fleet-Footed"), that is Lesser War Beasts (wolves, pumas, etc), Bellicose Foot (wardancers, dryads, etc), or Scouts (what it says on the tin). Other than that, I think you've got a good roster.

Thank you – food for thought. Depending on the scenario, fast moving units would be useful.

Those look great. Are they 15MM?

The bolt-shooters and a few of my units are 3d printed but he majority are cheap plastic figures from D&L Alliance (Ukrainian company)
