Does anyone have information on this campaign within the First Anglo-Afghan War, beyond the slightly sparse, confusing and uninformative wikipedia entry? It might have involved the Bengal Cavalry. |

One source Reminiscences of forty-three years in India by Lawrence, George Internet Archive link Pages 53-57 "The advance guard, under the command of Colonel Salter, consisted of two squadrons of the 2nd Light Cavalry, six companies of her Majesty's 13th Light Infantry, the flank companies of the 37tb, and one company 27th Bengal Native Infantry, with two 6pounders and the Shah's 2nd Cavalry." Note in preceding pages there is also more on the overall campaign in Afghanistan Quite a bit on this campaign deals with the actions of the 2nd Bengal Cavalry Later he states there were 2 Squadrons of the 2nd Light Cavalry (Bengal) – 220 troopers. Talks about their behavior in battle. link – Uses this work and others to discuss how the unit was disbanded and reformed afterwards – also found references to Sir John Fortescue referring to the unit being disbanded due to misconduct. |
