For General Quarters 1 and 2, I have a couple of 3rd party (semi-official) lists of ships date for the SDS's.
Some ships have in Remarks, "use the VT MODIFIER".
Some class examples: Atlanta CLAA, Brooklyn CA. There are 84 ships classes that have it but I have no idea what it is!
Anyone know for sure?

Could it refer to the proximity fuze, or "VT fuze", used by the US Navy on 5" guns from 1943 onwards?

VT stands for variable time.
