A tremendous need for health care arose during the Spanish-American War. Female nurses were at the ready to help in the effort as part of what soon would be the Army and Navy Nurse Corps.

The Daughters of the American Revolution and Red Cross trained and provided a significant number of those nurses… including Clara Barton at the age of 76. Many of those nurses were the ones going on to the contract nurses of the early military efforts.

In addition to memorials, Arlington National Cemetery has a section for those nurses among others up through World War 2 and a couple after.
