We tested Steve's WIP WW2 rules with another Eastern front game, the Russians having to negotiate some really tough terrain. Full write up and photos on the blog here:

I'm intrigued – it's hard to learn too much from a play-test when one side rolls so many sixes :^)

I was puzzled by a couple of things, or rather, I wondered why it was . . .

1 Soviet artillery tended to be used in intensive pre-planned barrages as far as I know. Do the rules allow for that? It seems the only Soviet artillery used was called in by an observer in a direct support role.

2 Why does Soviet artillery automatically get a minus one? Is that because it was direct support rather than pre-planned?

Cheers,
John

Hi, so given its played on a much smaller scale, just a couple of battalions we dont have pre planned barrages, I think you can argue that the depleted German infantry we were facing had already been reduced by pre game artillery.

So then as only direct support is available this is less useful than it might otherwise be and in particular less useful than say the German artillery.

I dont pretend to be an expert and the rules are not mine, mainly because I am no expert. But I do think Steve who is writing them knows his stuff.
