I'm painting some Black Watch for the early war period and seem to recall seeing the officers wearing standard British army uniforms. Would that be the case?

The officer here is wearing white breeches and ordinary black Gatiers. The picture is cropped so you can't see them.

My 42nd officers wear the Perry figure wearing a kilt. My 71st Highlander officer is wearing trews. For early war I would have my officers wearing kilts or trews.

Osprey Men-at-arms "The British Army in North America 1775-83" Plate H shows a 42nd officer in white breeches and traditional headgear.

At some point the highlanders probably discontinued the kilts. But this is the AWI and really almost anything goes.

Also kilts and trews just look cool.

Yeah. Any ol' regiment can wear standard dress, but only Highlanders get to sport the tartan. Why not let them stand out on your tabletop? Kilts or nothing! (I actually find trews much harder to paint.)
