My great-grandpa was a German-American during the ACW – 4th Minnesota, which I believe had a lot of Germans in it |

Germans came in large numbers during the 1840s, to both north and south. |

There were more Germans in the frontier army than Irish. Yet, rarely do you see them portrayed in any western. |

Probably because the Germans were the "baddies" in WW1 and WW2 when many of the Westerns were made, whereas the Irish were so loveable with that charming accent. Jim |

The only thing my dad knew about his early family history was that a member was a soldier in the ACW. He is from Belleville,IL which makes that logical. Probably a Union soldier from what I have seen about the history of the St.Louis area German population. |
