My great-grandpa was a German-American during the ACW – 4th Minnesota, which I believe had a lot of Germans in it

Germans came in large numbers during the 1840s, to both north and south.

There were more Germans in the frontier army than Irish. Yet, rarely do you see them portrayed in any western.

Probably because the Germans were the "baddies" in WW1 and WW2 when many of the Westerns were made, whereas the Irish were so loveable with that charming accent.

The only thing my dad knew about his early family history was that a member was a soldier in the ACW. He is from Belleville,IL which makes that logical. Probably a Union soldier from what I have seen about the history of the St.Louis area German population.
