"The war genre has always been a popular one throughout cinema's history. The first war movies were released way back during the silent era, with the films often dealing with the then-recent Great War (or World War I, as it got labeled post-World War II). Throughout the 20th century and then into the 21st, wars continued to be waged, which has inevitably (and quite tragically) necessitated the need for more war movies to continue being released, cinematically depicting the horrors of warfare. The quantity of war movies ensures that some don't get quite as much attention as others, with the following titles includable among the underrated war films out there. They're films with some level of acclaim from those who've seen them but are either older movies that aren't talked about as much nowadays or films that simply never found a huge audience. They're nevertheless all very compelling and are worth seeking out for viewers who appreciate gripping and often intense war movies…" link

I have big problems with both "overrated" and "underrated". By whom? |

I'm with John the OFM. I'm adding a couple to my watch list. I'd never heard of The Steel Helmet, for example. |

Definitely see "The Steel Helmet." Low budget, but not low in any other regard. Naturally, any list of ten or so "underappreciated" (which in this context I take to be films that did not have big box office, at least here in the US) is going to miss a lot of titles that have found their audience through television. Of these, a personal favorite is "Attack!" by Robert Altman, a film (like "The Steel Helmet") that at first had Army approval but lost it once the Pentagon saw what was actually going on film. So many more to suggest, but that blasted right arm of mine is wearing out already from typing…. TVAG |

The Fire on the Plain is the only one that I have not seen. The only one I will not watch again is Inglorious Bastards. |

Thanks Usually the most interesting thing about these lists is the contribution that fellow members make to them.

"A Time for Trumpets" was underrated and over shadowed by "Saving Private Ryan" when it came out. I consider it the superior film of the two. |

There are some of my favorites on the list and others I've never seen. "The Steel Helmet" is a very interesting film for its period and rewards viewing. I've never watched "Hamburger Hill" as a high school ROTC buddy died there. |

Oops! I meant, "When Trumpets Fade". Management, and this station, apologizes for the error. |

That's a good list I don't really have anything to add to it. I could add a number of films but I don't know what is considered "underrated." I didn't think "Cross of Iron" was underrated It's well know as one of the all time best war movies. Same for the "Light Horseman." "The Sand Pebbles" underrated? It was nominated for eight Oscars. It had an all star cast. Richard Attenborough won the Oscar for best supporting actor. Heck it was on network television at least once a year when I was a kid. Usually in two parts. That's back when we only had three channels. Not very many people think of "Hamburger Hill" but it's one of my favorite Vietnam movies. Another one is "Go Tell the Spartans." |

Hamburger Hill is a must watch. So authentic that one of the stolen valor folks took a story from it and used it as his own. |
