For some time I have wanted more than one dragoon unit a side and felt that the number of mounted figures tied up in these units is wasteful.
So, time to reorganise my Hinchliffe ECW dragoon units, Wardlawe's and Washington's, to create some surplus figures for more units.

The rules I use – "Victory Without Quarter" – also suggest they so rarely fought on horseback it is a waste to have mounted proxies.

Thus 2 bases of dismounted figures + a horse:

You place them behind each other if mounted & moving & side by side if dismounted. This is along the lines you're thinking of but a bit more radical.

#ochoin – your system seems quite similar to that many at the club use for games like Pikeman's Lament, where the unit may often not even have a horse but operates like it is either mounted or dismounted as the player wishes. This is fine, but I like the prettiness of the mounted and dismounted depictions, also it makes a difference in my rules so having a visual depiction is worth it.
BTW My rules are a mash up of VWQ and Command and Colours.

"but I like the prettiness of the mounted and dismounted depictions,"

In what is, after all, a visual hobby, I will not disagree with you.

"BTW My rules are a mash up of VWQ and Command and Colours."
Are they? I would dearly like to read them.

I'd be happy to send you a copy if I had your email address. But they are written up for my use, I've tried to keep them as succinct as possible not having to worry about others understanding them. Oh, and they're for a fun game with my shiny toys, don't expect an accurate depiction of ECW warfare.
The battles on my blog might give uo an idea of how they play.

" if I had your email address"

There's the rub. I will not post mine & nor would i expect you to post yours. TMP members are overwhelmingly nice & trustworthy but doxxing only takes one or two bad actors.

If only you were a member, we could PM.

My dragoon units are 50% mounted and 50% on foot. Mix both on a single base. Job done.
