Rules:
None. YOU can define it however you want.
Wait. You MUST give the artist, the song title, and provide a link.

I have been accused (😱) of being a Debbie Downer about music.

So, here. Your likes.

If you throw in "Imagine", all I can say is that I will not vote for it

I'll be Debbie Downer, but in a good way. It's too much. Too broad. If I list it all, I will break the internet.

My mind freezes up, 'cause I have SO MANY I'd like to nominate…

I'll just restrain myself with a classic goofy but popular hit similar in time and tone to some already noted: the one-hit wonder "Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum. YouTube link

SO MANY!! I have a Swinging Sixties playlist on my iTunes compiled from my library of CDs and downloads and it has 655 sings on it. Not all are "hippie era" songs, but a ton are. These are some of the goofiest, commercially successful "hippie" things. The genuine psychedelic freakouts and mind-blowers would require a whole 'nuther list.

Born too late for the Hippie Era. I didn't really hear the music of the 1960s until college in the late 1970s.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP02 May 2026 6:29 a.m. PST

Hippie Era is about when I gave up on songs and went exclusively instrumental. (I'm counting Carpenters as IN but not OF the Hippie Era.) But I'll admit to an affection for the Fifth Dimension--Aquarius (already linked) and Up Up and Away

+1 White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane), but I'll put in that the mono version of this (and also Someone To Love) is even better than the stereo — Grace Slick's voice comes through so much stronger when it's not being split between the speakers. Such a pity her voice was shot all to crap by the 70s.

"To be considered a band of the hippie era, the music generally entails the years 1965 to 1972"

Confession time. I do enjoy "California Dreaming" which is already nominated, and checks most of my boxes for hippie era music. Same problem as with Carpenters, I think: I see the Mamas and the Papas as more a continuation of folk--closer to Peter Paul and Mary than hippie music. Leftist, yes, mostly: but without the antagonism to country, reason and work which--along with the (completely unjustified) smug sense of superiority--defined hippiedom.

I've been ignoring the Big Boys, like the Beatles, Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, Love, The Who, Stones, Yardbirds, Dylan, Creedence, those folks who were not "hippies" per se but provided great anthems for that short era -- looking at garage bands and woo-bands and the second bananas who indulged in "hippie twaddle" songs (if you want to call it that). Peace, love, beads, bells, incense, and flower power. Groovy, man! I can only nod toward a handful of terrific songs from that era.

Here's a bonus!

Ah, The Yardbirds were musically ahead of the Beetles by several years, pity they couldn't hang onto any of their [great] lead guitarists.

Definitely Mod, not Hippie, but in the "Hippie era"

This one, they had an ample supply of the good drugs:

So many good Yardbirds tracks! One hardly knows where to begin with additions to miniMo's start. Not "hippie" exactly, but way cool. Heart Full of Soul, Happenings Ten Years Time Ago, Little Games, Shapes of Things, Think About It, Glimpses … one can go on and on.

Note that I said "hippie era".

"Dominique" by The Singing Nun came out in the hippie era. I would have a hard time calling it psychedelic or protest. Yet it fits my criteria.

I might point out that my Nun French teacher never tried to have us listen to it. Good thing, since I couldn't understand a thing.
