You were asked – TMP link How Young Are You?Average result: 66.099 years old |
ochoin | 30 Apr 2026 3:55 a.m. PST |
I have to ask: is it an American custom to ask how *young* are you? We'd say, "How old are you?" Or is Bill just being polite? |
rustymusket | 30 Apr 2026 4:59 a.m. PST |
Bill is just being polite. |

Thanks. I am a student of language & America provides me with much meat – just not in this case, evidently. |

It's more of a jokey thing than politesse. |

The average age is 66! Wow, I never thought that I would be on the younger side of the spectrum again. |

If it's good to be 'above average', then I'm happpy. Since averages can be skewed by a few outliers, it might be more informative to group responders into classes, such as 20s, 30s, 40s et cetera, and then calculate the modal (most common) class. Would that be 60s, I wonder? |
Grattan54 | 30 Apr 2026 9:54 a.m. PST |
You don't get younger, you get older. Hate when people say Iam 65 years young. Ahhh. |
bobspruster | 30 Apr 2026 11:43 a.m. PST |
I usually say, "I've taken 72 (currently) trips around the sun." If I then see a blank, slack jawed expression, I run away. |

Grattan54, tis cringey indeed. When I get carded for alcolhol, I usually chirp back: "Why, is there a senior discount?" =^,^= |
huron725 | 30 Apr 2026 2:40 p.m. PST |
Yeah I kind of figured with the occasional grumpy barbs that go back and forth on TMP. |

When I get carded for alcolhol, I usually chirp back: "Why, is there a senior discount?" I'm stealing that. |

An average of 66 means that there are very very few under 50s – this poll says , a few outliers but mainly 50-80. I don't think the hobby is greying (or balding), but TMP definitely is. Is it just TMP'S structure that puts off younger gamers? |

By memory… last time this Poll was asked the average age was 57!… Armand |

That's a very tight, very specific grouping. |

20thMaine, good point. The poll actually says the average age of TMP readers who responded is 66, not the average age of miniatures gamers. I play in a group with most members under 60, some in 20's. None read TMP except me. I brought the average age here up as I have made 82 round trips. Have I taken the most of all readers? |

"By memory… last time this Poll was asked the average age was 57!…" aie Being just above the average…it confirms that together with our civilisation, we are a dying specie. The last wargamers (historical). From time to time I am sorry, there will be no one to give my big collection to. No one to care and appreciate, and use it. Apocalypse Now "this is the end, my friend…" |

At a young and vigorous (I lie) 62, I'm amazed at how many of you are geezers. |
robert piepenbrink | 01 May 2026 8:24 a.m. PST |
You can't derive an answer as precise as Bill's from responses which only place us within a 10-year window. But you could legitimately say the median TMP respondent is in his 60's. I don't know where the cool kids hang out either. There may not be any. I view the term "the hobby" with great suspicion. It's so vague it can include or exclude pretty much anything or anyone. But I'm pretty sure historical miniatures gamers are a smaller precentage of teens than of geezers, and nearly certain of this when it comes to horse and musket. |

I'm not surprised the average age of TMP is high. The web 1.0 format is helping drive that, probably a lot. Most of my groups.io mailing lists are probably similarly aged. People under 50 aren't very fond of email. I hang out in a bunch of Discords that are full of 20- and 30-somethings, and the older participants are largely under 60 (Discord sort of automatically filters out most over-60s for a variety of reasons). There's plenty of activity, painting, crafting, rules innovation, game AARs, all of it. - Ix |

Not surprised by the results at all!! I'm (soon to be) 56 and I am the baby of my local group!! |

Will be 74 on the 12th. You are only as old as it takes you to paint your nest battalion. Could paint faster when younger… |
