Always a fan of "where did this come from" history. It ties us to our cultural heritage. I do find it funny that the ranks and organizational terms used in the UK and US tend to overwhelmingly come from…..the French usage of those terms…:^))

But I think he might be wrong on the origin of "private." Especially since it is most likely the only term of rank that does not come from common French usage: some research I've found was that it was mostly used as "private gentlemen" from ECW (or earlier) usage referring to men of modest means, paying for their own kit, but serving as a non-commissioned, non-leadership role soldier.

Still neat information, though. Thanks Legion.
