As Keith Laumer wrote in a Retief novel "after the war, we'll write our memoirs. We'll leave out all the mistakes, and put in everything we wish we'd done."

I'm sure the memoirs of American and British generals are much more truthful. (The memoirs of Soviet generals are, I understand, released in ring binders.) As for the memoirs of Napoleonic officers--well, where should we begin?
