"Rear Admiral Shoji Nishimura had been on the bridge of his flagship Naka since 0400, now around at 0650 the sun was up and visibility was increasing to around 20,000 yards. Nishimura's original command had been the 4th Destroyer Flotilla but recent events had seen him placed in charge of a scratch force tasked with covering another invasion convoy bound for the east coast of Malaya. Now, while standing on the bridge Nishimura's mind wondered. It had been a year since his promotion to rear admiral and today with his scratch force assembled he found himself considering what the day would hold.

In addition to the Naka, Nishimura had under his direct command the light cruiser Nagara and the destroyers from the the 6th Destroyer Division, specifically the Akatsuki class destroyers Akatsuki, Hibiki, Ikazuchi and Inazuma. Nagara was some distance off his port beam and between the two light cruisers were the four destroyers all steaming in line abreast…"
