The Battle of Portland, also known as The Three Day Battle, is a most interesting fight, which involved three of the most celebrated admirals in history – Tromp, de Ruyter and Blake. In addition, the defence of General at Sea Blake's small group of ships against the Dutch fleet is considered by some historians as being the crucial event that convinced the English Generals at Sea to introduce the line of battle, which they used for the first time in the next battle, the Gabbard.
In this post, my old pal Captain Steve refights the first day of this most famous of battles in the First Anglo-Dutch War, with a link to a previous post illustrating the planning and preparation that went into the game using the rule set 'General at Sea'.
If you would like to know more about this dramatic game as the English and Dutch fleets of some 150 ships went toe-to-toe off Portland Bill, then just follow the link to JJ's. link JJ |
