On the morning of December 21, 1943, five men took off from Ladd Field in freezing, bitter temperatures. They were assigned to the Cold Weather Testing Squadron of the Air Transport Command's Alaskan wing. While flying a B-24 over the remote wilderness west of Fairbanks, an engine failed, and the heavy bomber spiraled towards earth. Amidst the chaos, co-pilot Lt. Leon Crane managed to bail out just moments before the plane crashed into a ball of flames…
