Despite what we've all been led to believe by the many different Zorro films, television programs, comic books, etc., the Californios apparently did not usually settle their differences with displays of skilled and acrobatic fencing. I came across this account of dueling in California written by the Russian naval officer, Dmitry Zavalishin. He visited California in 1824 and, because he spoke Spanish, quickly made friends and acquaintances among the Californios. Here is what he had to say:…"
