I may have asked this and even gotten an answer before, but anyone remember a game from at least 25 years ago that was about designing an interplanetary racer and racing around the solar system while trying to snipe at your opponents? Sort of like Death Race in space, with design rules. It featured templates and rules for designing armed racers (which was actually fun) and some scenarios. I think it involved vector movement and there were some planets and objectives as punch-out counters. It was by one of the long defunct game companies like GDW, TSR, Task Force, etc. I'm thinking this was late 80's to mid 90's at best.

It was not:

Sound like Tri Planetary. Original from GDW, later KS release from Steve Jackson Games

Could be Mayday (also GDW, on RPGNow) which was basically Traveller ship combat with hexes

The movement and rules sounds like both Triplanetary and Mayday, but neither of those had any ship design rules in them. Your description sounds like someone merged Car Wars with Triplanetary… which actually sounds like a lot of fun.

Yaquinto had… Demon's Run? I'm not sure if you design ships in Demon's Run. You don't design ships in Triplanetary.

I am eager to hear the answer, and the other guesses!

Looked up Demon's Run. Yes, it includes ship design. Sounds like what you're looking for:

Sounds like the episode 'Space Race' from Stargate SG-1 (S7: Ep 8)

It was not Mayday for sure. Demon's run has a lot of the same elements but I do not think it was a hex based game and I definitely would have remembered if the box folded out into the game board like it does in Demon's Run.
