Oh. There were many! 🙄😄 Feel free to contribute. Anything by Melanie. Lay Down "We bled inside each other's wounds…" Really? In the year 2525. Look it up. I'm not doing all the work here! Billy Jack. 🙄 See above. |

Even if they're stupid, can you like them? 'Signs' by the Five Man Electrical Band. "And the sign said "Everybody welcome Come in, kneel down and pray" But when they passed around the plate at the end of it all I didn't have a penny to pay So I got me a pen and a paper And I made up my own little sign I said, "Thank you, Lord, for thinkin' 'bout me I'm alive and doin' fine" |
John the OFM | 13 Apr 2026 8:00 p.m. PST |
Yes, it's stupid. And, no. I don't like it. 😄 |

Agree with the stupid ones listed, but also a huge outflowing of fantastic music. My daughters and their friends are still listening to music from the late 60s and early 70s, and they sound great 50 years later. Also a great time to be young and traveling around. |

All of them. And I was there. At least I was in the US, and the right age. Parkinson dates the British loss of momentum to the Gothic Revival, but at least they got decent-looking buildings out of it. We clearly lost our edge beginning in the Sixties, but all we got was half a generation of Yahoos--feeling instead of thinking. |

They're all stupid. Some just happen to be stupider than others. And some have decent melody and you can dance to ‘em. California Dreamin' One Tin Soldier (or whatever the title is) Where Have All the Flowers Gone? Pave Paradise and Put Up a Parking Lot (or any other song by that twit) Any song whatsoever by Neil Young Born in the USA Fortunate Son (or whatever that title is. Don't worry a—h— the US doesn't want *you* in the Army either.) Free Bird (and I love Lynyrd Skynyrd) Saturday Night Special (again, the otherwise great LS) Basically if it's whiny, b*y, self-righteous, superior scolding, it's stupid. Oh, you can still sing the song for me— just don't lecture me before or after with your pinheaded myopic ignorant and clueless opinions. Yeah, Imagine is in that class. So is Same Auld Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg . So he takes his old flame into a grocery store parking lot on Christmas Eve, gets her drunk enough on cheap beer to say she doesn't love her husband (who happens to work hard and create buildings for people to live, learn, work and worship in, and is probably a loving father to their kids, which is waaay more than can be said of the deadbeat, loner singer), then LETS HER DRIVE AWAY, and thinks it's all somehow romantic? No, dude, you're just a JERK, and she's a helluva lot better off without your narcissistic self-centered carcass in her life— if she manages to survive her drunken drive home. I despise everything about this song, and only an aging hippie rock star could think it's anything other than utter self-aggrandizing TRIPE. But the music is good, demmit, and every New Year's Eve it gets trotted out on the Oldies stations (even though it's not set at New Year's Eve). [/rant] |

'San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)' "For those who come to San Francisco Summertime will be a love-in there In the streets of San Francisco Gentle people with flowers in their hair All across the nation Such a strange vibration People in motion There's a whole generation With a new explanation People in motion People in motion" |
ochoin | 14 Apr 2026 6:11 a.m. PST |
Wow, Parzival. A tad bitter. … Umm, you didn't happen to work hard and create buildings for people to live, learn, work and worship in, and were probably a loving father to your kids? |
Editor in Chief Bill | 14 Apr 2026 6:26 a.m. PST |
Anything by Melanie. Lay Down She had more than one song? I know there's a 60s song about how you only need love, not money… can't think of the title. |
| Choctaw | 14 Apr 2026 6:52 a.m. PST |
Or Parzival, they are just two former lovers talking about old times and their current lives. It is based on a true story and the girl was thrilled he actually wrote a song about it. If she's happy with it then that's all that matters. I guess you and George Costanza think much more highly about architects than is common. Imagine. Yuck. |

One category it never occurred to me to put The Beatles in was 'hippies'. But what do I know, I was a punk and all hippies were 'Boring Old Farts' in Year Zero, 1976. |
| Alakamassa | 14 Apr 2026 7:06 a.m. PST |
Hey, I like Melanie. "Brand new pair of Rollerskates" was pretty whimsical. What 14 year-old girl today could accomplish what she did. Just read an article about Donovan this morning saying his music needs reassessment for its diversity and incite on the dark side of Hippie culture. I was a big fan of Donovan; spotty as his music sometimes was. His autobiography tarnished his rep after he took credit for being the inspiration behind the Beatles' best work. Today several of his lyrics referring to hooking up with 14 year-old girls is just creepy. Nevertheless, Sunshine Superman fills me with nostalgia for days at the beach. |

Basically if it's whiny, b*y, self-righteous, superior scolding, it's stupid. Yup. "I'm better than you!" That sums it up. "Little Pink Houses" "Signs" "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia". (Pronounced "Joe wa Juh") |
robert piepenbrink | 14 Apr 2026 8:23 a.m. PST |
Let's not forget "Little Boxes"--outraged at the peasantry not living in tenaments any more. A little pre-Hippie, but they loved it. It's those early Beatles clean-shaven and in identical costumes which throw you off, Martin. If your first sight of them was from one of the later LPs, you wouldn't see them as anything else. |

Dal Gavan | 14 Apr 2026 1:26 p.m. PST |
If I like a song I listen to it. If I don't, I ignore it, regardless of era. But music is like food and wargames rules- everyone has different tastes. But with some "modern music", eg (C)rap, it's another story. For a start, there's no real music, just a heavy "bubblegum" back beat with some chanting and unintelligible grunts. |
| cavcrazy | 14 Apr 2026 3:21 p.m. PST |
I will take all the "hippie music" over anything being done today in a split second. |

Being over-the-top for fun. And, no, not an architect. But yes, a loving father. I just sometimes think about what a singer is singing, and wondering if he or she has ever given it any real thought at all. Probably not! Hey, I still hum along, even if I think the narrator/singer is an ignoramus. |

This is the most Freudian thread I've ever read on TMP. |
robert piepenbrink | 14 Apr 2026 6:13 p.m. PST |
Not sure about that, Ochoin. But the fault line among American Boomers is certainly on full display. They're doing something today, cavcrazy? I've got a little Celtic and a fair bit of instrumental, but otherwise music ended for me with folk and British Invasion--sans Beatles. |
ochoin | 14 Apr 2026 6:56 p.m. PST |
If this isn't Freudian, I dread to think what a Jungian version of the thread would look like. Probably need a bigger table and more figures. |
