"What dormant projects do you keep going back to?" Topic

"Dormant", meaning "it's been *n* years since I last played them!" Yet, here they are on my painting table again.

Pirates. The Brigade Games recent newsletter featured AWI American Marines. ("Hey! I still have all those ships!" And I never did finish those 1740 British Marines. Oh, look Lt Maynard with even more Marines!"
"I KNEW I had painted some Foundry LI as AWI British Marines for Lexington… There they are!"

Wild West. Marty Robbins singing El Paso did it. That plus my YouTube algorithm popped up with Comanche vs Spain, ca 1757.
Watched Tombstone the other night. "I'm your huckleberry!" "Let's have a spelling contest!"

FIW and AWI. Not exactly "dormant", but starting to twitch in their sleep.

HINT: If you want to sell off and get rid of a collection, do the whole thing. It's like the crocus in my "lawn". Unless you dig them out, they'll be back again in late March.

Achaemenid Persians! Though since Midgard came along, I don't have to paint as many, so I am tempted…

I have yet to play it, but I keep gathering up more and more 28mm Crimean war… I'll buy figures, put them into units, bag them with identification on the bags, pack them away, British, French, Russians, Turks, Sardinia….I look for rules, watch videos, and then go back to painting and playing other periods.

Finishing book research projects to be print ready.
A series of primer books to encourage the reader to do more in depth research on a topic. Alabama in Flames: the Creek War of 1812-13; Mississippi in Flames: the Chickasaw-French War of the 170s; the Korean Three Kingdoms Era.

Arthurian Dark Age figs for an old shop game which was my entry into metal figs and miniatures gaming. Start and move on. Start and move on.

Celts. I painted up a bunch in 2012, then we evacuated our neighborhood for the Waldo Canyon forest fire. I came back to the house after a week or so, tried a couple rule sets for Celts vs Celts, but was unenthused, and moved on to something else.

Last fall, while hiking in the mountains, I got to thinking about them again. I got the Saga Crusades book at an auction about the same time, and realized there was a Saga variant for Celts, and I've been busy painting Celts since November! Now, if I could just get a copy of the Saga: Age of Hannibal book, which has the Celts and went out of print, then came back just in time to be messed up by the tariff situation!

I also bought Pathans, who sat around for years! A few years ago, I got enthused and painted up almost all of theme.

BattleTech just popped back out thanks to spotting and buying yet another Ral Partha Panther when I was at TotalCon in February. Which led to a binge of purchases filling out more companies for my Alpha Strike Battalions, and now more painting.

Between RP and FASA Panthers, I now have quite a sufficientry for Alpha Strike big battles, 43 for Kurita and 1 for the Gray Death Legion.

20mm zombies have been bubbling under for about a year now for a trip back to the workbench after a long slumber…

Peter Laing Marlboro figures. No rules yet, but a challenge to paint them well. 200 down over the last decades, 1000's to go!

My 15mm Napoleonic naval ships US and British, even wrote my own rules but lack of space to play it at home.

Fantasy. Last D&D game was over 40 years ago.

Several groups filled out this century.

Currently, several figures on the painting table.

Maybe a game using Dragon Rampant in the future.

WOTR. Did them in 6, 15 and 28. There may have been 10mm at one time. Never jelled because I was never satisfied I understood the math of the thing--ranges, frontages, rates of fire and formations. Finally sold off everything but some Tudors somewhere around late WOTR and Flodden and Flodden Scots, rebased as necessary and added them to the fantasy armies where I don't worry about such things.

I can tell myself I'm past it, but I keep scanning flea market tables for a few more kerns, gallowglasses and Border Horse.

And--confession time here--while I moved the big CLS armies to be with their fellows in Pendleton, If something doesn't break soon, I'll be buying unpainted 28mm from used casting dealers just to have some to paint. 2mm & 6mm are good scales to play with, but they don't scratch the painting itch.

Seven Years Picnic with the old Eureka Teddy Bears – had a few painted, just found the rest and am slowly painting them up

I have some Zombicide zombies I haven't finished painting (can't decide what colors to paint their shoes) for at least 6 years…

I just today primed my 1997 Space Hulk Space Marine "Terminators." I decided to just prime ‘em all in Rust-o-leum "Apple Red."
They now look like an early model Corvette. Time to chrome ‘em up and add some gold rims, etc..

(I tossed in a mech from the present day "Battletech" starter set, ‘cause I figured it could be a stand-in for whatever the heck that "Dreadnought" thing is in the old GW pretty-picture promo booklet— not that Space Hulk has stats for that.)

Next uo— The Genestealers (Totally-Not-Aliens aliens).

My 45 year old 15mm Napoleonics are being considered for a revival. They were painted color block style with enamels and mounted for E3. I am considering mounting them for Blucher, or for AoE and Napoleons Battles. A little touch up on the figures will also make them look better. I last used the figures in a game back in ‘87

Warlord Epic Thirty Years War. Limping along with occasional work but very slow.

Slowly working through the ancient armies in 25/28mm. Each quarter I add another 200 or so painted miniatures for one army. This last quarter was steppe armies or nomads with some Huns. Glad to inform there are sufficient painted miniatures now to have a go at steppe army vs….somebody army. Summer game of COE (Clash of Empires).

18mm SYW- 376 figures either bare metal or waiting to be finished and based- and "Thematic" Byzantines (15mm), about 100 figures awaiting paint. The last SYW game was only three years ago. The last game with the Byzzies was about 12 years ago.

Colonials. I have hundreds and hundreds of the old Ral Partha Colonials, with several hundred painted. I just never get around to finishing an army. I keep buying more, as I find them, and adding them to the pile of shame. Maybe one day I'll finish them… or at least one army!!!

I don't call it a "pile of shame". I call it "lining the wall of my basement that is facing the Chamberlain plant in Scranton."

For me it's 10mm ancients. I've been working on building a force of Republican Romans and Carthaginians on and off for about 20 years. Mostly off, due to other projects having higher priority. I'm finally beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel however

I call that the "back burner syndrome".

I might have everyone beat (and, no, I'm not proud of it) – 40 1787-94 Russian dragoons and Kościuszko era (1792-1794) Polish cavarly that have been staring at me for almost 3 decades.

I keep getting sidetracked by other periods and have yet to go back and finish the period that I started with when I returned to wargaming back in the '90s.

"If I can ever get the 1st Schleswig-Holstein Swedish contingent finished," I told them recently, "I'll finish off you guys." Hopefully, I'll get them done before my eyesight goes!

Spanish Civil War 20mm. I have the Legion and militia painted and every 8-10 months I pull out some Republicans or Moors to paint. It's been at least ten years since I've played a game with them.

LotR pops up on the painting desk as I whittle down the unpainted collection.
