Two questions in close relations: In the Prussian regulation from 1812 the infantry is supposed to use a form of colonne serré versus cavalry during an assault (Formierung gegen Cavallerie waehrend der Attaque und überhaupt). Would a French assault column from a six company bataillon do the same or would they change into a hollow square?

In Valour & Fortitude an assault column is pretty much toast if hit in the flank by anything better than the worst cavalry. As formation changes as reaction to cav charges are not possible, I do not consider that a appropiate reflection of reality. Therefore I want to introduce some house ruling. Would it be reasonable to assume that an assault column can change to some form of square outside of the most disadvantageous circumstances?

See if I can help a little bit.
The Prussians stopped using hollow squares vs cavalry going to a closed column instead. It is faster by my reading that companies have to swing around.
A attack column has more spaces between companies.
