I bought this rules set after reading an article in Wargames Illustrated that featured the period and the rules. The photos in the article were taken from the rules and these alone got me excited. I figured I could leverage my 20mm Late War Germans and various European civilians I had been collecting for the Easter Rebellion and the Fall of Berlin. The rules are well laid out and it's fairly easy to look up specific rules. I am going to build my own index for easier reference. A lot of energy is put into the initial random placement of the forces, with, as with most of the rules, the Freikorps being favored over the Reds. I believe this is historical, but it leads to a punishing game for the Reds. I chose two equal forces, according to the point system, but, even with the Freikorps attacking the Reds who were defending buildings (also historic) the Freikorps had an overwhelming advantage. Certain mechanics, such as the awarding of Asset Cards snowballed in favor of the Freikorps as the cards are awarded one per dead Red miniature and so once the Freikorps began to cause casualties, the more they killed the more they were able to kill. Perhaps this too is historic, but I am going to tweak the rules to produce, I hope, a more balanced game. Even if it's not historic, it will allow the Red players to have a shot at a fun game, which this test game was not for them. |
