I just glued the Knuckleduster stl driver and shotgunner onto the pencil sharpener wagon, which is pulled by a team of four Scruby horses from the 1960s. You can still see the slots in their backs where the saddle fit if you look close. My first minis were 50 Scruby 30mm AWI, ordered from an ad in BOYS LIFE, 1960. I still have about 20 of them left, in action: 4 Haslet Delawares, 6 light infantry, 9 Glovers Marbleheaders. So how old must you be to call yourself a grognard? |

I'm 70 and I'm not sure I've ever even seen a Scruby… |

I know I have never seen one. I think they are an urban myth. |

I had a Scruby unit of American AWI LI. They have now gone on to my friend, but they still see action. |

I was born about a week after the Korean War started. I subscribed to the General. I subscribed to Strategy and Tactics BEFORE they include a game. Which you had to glue to cardboard to cut out with an X-acto knife or box cutter. I played Diplomacy BY MAIL!!! Do I qualify as a Grognard? I remember some pompous ass dude in S&T bragging about quizzing prospective club members, to see if they were "worthy". 🙄 |

In 1959 or early 60 Scruby were my first figures after seeing an article in Look Magazine. I still have and game with those figures. Scruby's Table Top Talk was my first wargame magazine, and I bought Joe Morschauser's book because of a Scruby review. The start of 70 years of wargaming. |

I've always associated "grognard" with a die hard board gamer. |

I bought my first war game figure from Jack Scruby in 1966. I visited him in 1970. I wrote his obituary for The Courier in 1988 link Hardly a myth. More like the father of modern war gaming. |

I probably have over 2000 (3000?) of Scrubys 20mm Napoleonics. |

Yeah, Morshauser's book, and TABLE TOP TALK, was ALL there was to the hobby in the US. I did AWI, Franco-Prussion, 20 mm African colonial after seeing ZULU in 1964, ancients, etc. Started moving into Hinchliffe's in the 1970s. |

John, you are four years my junior, and you qualify. |

Had a British Napoleonic army of Scruby figs in the 60's :) Still have some random figs and a couple of TTT's around somewhere ? |

I have about 50 Scruby 20mm Napoleonics and have tried for years to order more without success. They are lovely figures. |

Still have my painted Army of Conde in 20-25mm Scruby form. Painted back in 1977-8 period. About 200 miniatures of infantry, cavalry and artillery batteries. |

We took a vacation to California in '67 or '68. and I pestered my parents into going through Visalia to see Mr. Scruby's store. We got there, and it had closed down. I later found they had moved to Cambria (I think) on the coast. I was able to visit the store a couple times in the 1980s. I still have a few of his figures around. Also, his catalogue, and fond memories of looking through it for hours. Grelber |

I have some Highlanders in khaki, sun helmets and kilts, and some Australians in khaki and turned up hats. |

More importantly than the few figures I could afford at the time, I got my first set of real wargame rules from Scruby: "Fire and Charge." |

You can still order 20mm Napoleonic figures from Historifigs. |

I sent for some samples around 1970. The knights that came weren't quite as nice as Airfix to my eye. A few years later I sent for some AWI. They were different in size from Airfix and some Minifigs I had, which were also very different from Airfix. Then I met Cathy and my interests went in a different direction for a few years. I now have a few 40mm Scrubys and am seriously considering a Mexican American War project with the Historifigs. |

I placed my first Scruby order about 1968-1969, and ordered them by brigades when I went into the Air Guard in 1972 and had actual money. Almost all 30mm Napoleonics, and they're still on the tables whenever we can get together for a 30mm CLS game. |

Mine were Mexican War infantry. Still have. I think a couple might be in my "to paint" pile. |

I had a bunch of Scruby 9mm (?) Ancients. Romans, Macedonians, Assyrians, Egyptians, etc. Played with them for hours when I was a kid. No idea where they are now. |
| rmaker | 10 Apr 2026 11:05 a.m. PST |
Perris, those would be N-gauge. My first figures were Scruby's, and I still have a large collection. Mostly 20 and 25mm Napoleonics, 20mm Medievals, and N-gauge AWI, Ancient, and FPW. Not the most detailed figures around (I find most modern figures are over-detailed), but easy to paint and rugged. |

I do not still play with Scruby figures. Possibly the only time I might have was at HAVOC I or II in the very early ‘80s. The very first Napoleonics game that I played in was C,L, & S. The table was large, the figures and units were large, and very minimal plain terrain. If any or some of the figures were Scruby's, I wouldn't have known back then |

Does N-Guage count? Then over a thousand Napoleonics. My favorite figures because they look great in mass and match my current painting speed and skills! |

Duke Sefreid introduced me to Scruby 30mm Napoleonics about 1959 or 1960. In about 1961, on a familly vacation to California from Ohio, my father took me to visit Jack Scruby one evening. By the mmid 60s I had sold my Scrubys and moved on to to 30mm (really 33mm) Staddens and Surens. Tom |
