Not quite today as he died aged 102 on 14-Jan but his obituary is in today's Times Flew his first Op as a navigator over Berlin Nov 22-23 1943; survived the Nuremburg raid of March 30-31 1944, possibly because his pilot realising they were making contrails in the cloudless sky and dropped altitude to a safer level; completed his tour of 30 operations [including several 1/3 flights over Normandy] in May 1944. After the war flew 264 missions as part of the Berlin Airlift in Avro Yorks. Stayed in the RAF finally as an instructor/examiner and finally deputy to the Group Navigation Officer in 38 Group planning routes for the Falklands in 1982. Retired shortly after aged 60 with 12,477 flying hours in his log book. Was a keen cricketer and went on to be an award winning gardener in retirement winning Sittingbourne in Bloom awards for his front garden. Clearly a man who wrung the most out of life. |
