I remember reading about the French army using the mitrailleuse like artillery, and thinking, "Well that's dumb. Why did they do that?"

Then I watched a video like this, demonstrating how it works, and thought "oh".

It was kinda brilliant in a Rube Goldberg way, but it's hard to see how it could have been an effective battlefield weapon.
