I have a set of gel pens (white, silver, gold) that are ball points, and also a set of 12 color Betem acrylic markers, which are felt tips. I love them both, and wish I'd had them years ago.

I'll turn 80 next birthday, and my hands and eyes are not what they used t be. The pens/markers let me do lines smaller and straighter than a brush. Still need brushes, because the pens don't work in crevices and at corners, but for belts and sergeant's stripes and war paint and such they are excellent.

If you haven't tried them I recommend it. Got mine from Amazon and they are less than a dollar per color. The 12 pack felt tip set was about $7. USD

I see Army Painter now has something similar, but way more expensive.

How do they handle spray mat top coats? Do they bleed?

Thanks

Are the gel pens artist pens, or the gel pens that you can buy at the grocery store?

doc mcb28 Mar 2026 10:54 a.m. PST

I do the Minwax dip and there is no bleeding. The pens work fine on top of the dip also. I do Testors dullcote on top of the shiney dip but don't know how it would affect te pen marks. I am GUESSING there is no problem.

79th, I'm not sure. Do a search on Amazon for gel pens and you get a dozen choices at least. Some of which may be better than what I am using. I went with cheap.

I'll go to Amazon and catch the exact two products I am uising.

0.6mm Fine Point White Gel Pens, 3-Pack for Artists Drawing, Sketching, Illustration, and Adult Coloring Books, Opaque White Ink for Black Paper, Bullet Journaling, and Card Making

These are $5.84 USD for three: get the pack with white, silver, gold.

The ball points handle a bit differently for the felt tip but I''ve done well with both.

I am doing Comanches, and am now going back through my already painted collection and adding more war paint to horses and to warriors. And in some cases painting over brush work that was too big and sloppy and I can now do smaller and sharper with a pen.

It is so easy I must restrain myself not to overdo it!

Once it dries it is easy to paint over mistakes and try again.

Next is to put yellow sergeant's stripes on two sleeves.

I use Acrylic ink paint pens a lot! They are often shown as being used on rocks (of all things). I Prime in base color. Paint pens for many of the details. Hobby paint for some things. Buy those pens with a brush end. Anything else will be of limited use. I have bought a 120 set. A 240 count set (31 cents per pen). And two 24 count sets for greens and skin tones. They really speed up painting time. They won't work for everything. But what they do they do very well! I buy mine from Amazon. I have bought 7 of the Army Painter Speed Paint ones. Didn't realize they were Speedpaint when I bought them. But that's ok. I have used pens for a while now. I love them! You can seal them if you are worried about bleeding. I occasionally see it when using Agrax or Nuln oil.

Thanks.

John

Brush end?

I bought some from Michael's. They are good for touching up little bits that were missed. No need to pour out paint or clean up a brush.

On a whim I picked up some of the Army Painter ones. Pretty happy with them and will probably get some more as I only have six and need an expanded pallet. My critical mistake was getting a few each from the two sets so I'll end up buying them all as singles.

Thanks for the tip. I've used the Staedtler Mars pens for small black marks for a long time, but haven't tried other colors. I'll look for the ones you recommended.

Doc if you look up acrylic ink paint pens they come with a variety of tips. Brush end will be listed or Fine, medium and so on.

Thanks.
