I've seen Colbert waxing ecstatic over LOTR on his shows. He knows his stuff. I'd hate to face him in a trivia contest.
He probably speaks all 17 Elven languages. Fluently.

Well, if we have to have a Tom Bombadil movie, let's get it done befall the original Hobbit actors get rheumatism and hobble around.

I nominate Brian Blessed. Or Brian Cox.

A far more important casting decision, who will play Goldberry?

Anya Taylor-Joy.
Or, to give her her needed break, Kat from agirlandadoodle.

Do I have to wait 5 years?
It certainly handles the aging of Sam, Merry and Fool of a Took Pippin.

And that kills the franchise for me. I know a heck of a lot about Middle-Earth, too, but I wouldn't attempt to even think about writing new fiction for it. Frankly, if you're not a middle-aged English professor and Chair of Medieval Literature at Oxford and a devout Catholic, then there is no way you are going to be able to replicate Tolkien's work on even a minimal level.

Hey, Colbert! Go write your OWN damn fantasy epic. You're gonna have plenty of time for it, coming up real soon.

Colbert could always return to comedy…. Oh, right. That ship hit an iceberg a long time ago.

And philologist, Parzival. Don't forget Philology.

If I'm still above the grass, I'll watch it.

How about Michael Caine and Whoopie Goldberg?

Why? Why? Why?

Why hire a political comedian to write a LOTR movie? I get that he's a big fan but I cannot fathom this happening without it being filled with his politics. It will diminish the original movies and diminish the brand.

Ugh. It's a cash grab with a political hack writing it.

I can't wait for the Trump references and covid references and all the other modern crap that will be put into this.

Well, Colbert is Catholic.
I'll probably go see it, but I have my doubts. Bombadil is an interesting character, but he isn't filled out in the books as well as he might. At best, just hints here and there.

Interesting to see Colbert rejected because of his politics.
Yes, he is Catholic. So are Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel by the way.
Colbert also teaches Sunday School.

As far as I am concerned, his Tolkien fandom qualifies him. And so does Peter Jackson's endorsement and collaboration. I guess never having fought at the Somme…
(Maybe he can sneak in an explanation of how Merry's sword severed the Witch King's invulnerability. Thus allowing Éowyn to slay him.)

Does this mean that unless you never had to flee both the Communists and Nazis that you cannot direct an adaptation of Darkness at Noon?
And who did Lucas think he was? How did he qualify to do Star Wars?
Did Christopher Nolan work on the Manhattan Project? 🤔
Was Stanley Kubrick a gladiator?
