Every story I read just cracked me up at how wordy and overblown they are. It's fairly obvious that he was being paid $.05 USD/word.

H.P. Lovecraft wrote his stories in the 1920's-1930's. Getting paid $0.05 USD/word would have been a princely sum!

Sandy Peterson created the RPG, Call of Cthulhu (CoC), based on Lovecraft's stories. CoC is one of the top, most successful horror genre RPG's, in the history of RPG's. I found Peterson's game and adventure modules far more frightening than Lovecraft and friends' stories. However, without the Cthulhu stories, Peterson would never have launched his game.

Lovecraft did not invent horror stories, but his works certainly helped grow the genre. Cheers!

I couldn't get past how wordy and padded the stories were. They read as silly to me. Not scary at all. YMMV
