What is this grey thing? My guess is something to catch shell casings, but why would tehy bother with that?

It's a rock isn't it? The bipod is folded and it's resting on a rock. Not the most stable looking platform though. |

I agree with the rock. It looks like it is supposed to be more 'mountainous' to represent the Gebirgsjagers intended environment. |

Mark me down for "rock" as well. Although, I initially thought that it was a piece of aircraft wreckage. Don't ask me why, that is just the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the photo. |
