I have been pondering giving the "800 Fighting Englishmen" official TS&TF "large battles" variant a trial game. It could fill a need for a really big game that still uses many of the same, easy-to-learn mechanics. My really big games of regular TS&TF in the past tend to bog down and take too long to finish. And the same holds true for some of the unofficial variants I've toyed with. But reading thru the rules set carefully, I keep coming up with questions about things that seem puzzling or not entirely clear. The term "unit" for example is used a lot but also "stand" and "maneuvering element" -- it is not always clear what is being referred to. And close combat -- this would seem to be conducted between stands, not figures, but again, isn't clear. And what about the Critical Morale table, where the British normally are good on an 18 or less on a d20 -- but having a mounted commander with a unit provides a +2 benefit, so a British unit with a mounted leader is NEVER going to fail morale? Is this the intent? I could go on -- I am also uncertain how many units/stands/maneuver elements are supposed to be fielded for a balanced game, for example -- but to start this topic, who out there is familiar enough with this rules set to offer commentary or feedback or answer questions posted here? I could really use outside expertise, rather than guess or resort to a house rule before I've even played this. |
